29 laid off at mill in Chipman

Robin Wasson says the loss of a single job, much less 29, is substantial in a town as small as Chipman.

But as bad as the recent layoffs at the village’s J.D. Irving Ltd.-owned Grand Lake Timber mill are, the deputy mayor said things could be much worse.

“There’s mills shutting down all over the country. Downsizing is bad, but it’s better than putting locks on the doors,” said Wasson, who also works as a labourer at the mill and is the vice-president of the mill’s union.
