Talent Can’t Be Defined by Age

Nikki Yanofsky swears she isn’t sick of having reporters wonder if she’s too young to fully appreciate jazz music.

The 15-year-old prodigy will perform many vintage numbers at this year’s Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival, but she said age is nothing more than a number.

“I don’t blame them for asking, because it’s an honest question,” said the Montreal native, who begins Grade 10 shortly before travelling to Fredericton this year. “But I always answer the same way. It doesn’t make a difference how old you are as long as you’re doing what you love. And I am for sure doing what I love.”

That budding romance first enchanted fans all over the world when she closed the Ella Fitzgerald tribute album, We All Love Ella: Celebrating the First Lady of Song, when she was 13 years old. Many listeners were shocked to find the girl behind such soulful notes had just entered adolescence and could evoke Ella’s voice as if she harkened from those same old cabaret days.
