Barber plays in the past

Jill Barber may have started her career as a folk balladeer, but she’s found her true muse in jazzier grooves – tunes that she’ll showcase on The Playhouse stage at this year’s Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival.

“People have called this record a departure from my folkier days, but I really feel like it’s more of an arrival,” she said of 2008’s Chances, nominated for a Polaris Music Prize this year. “It’s a place, a sound that I have been longing for in my own music for a long time.”

She said that sound of yesteryear is near and dear to her heart – the soaring sax riffs, tinkling piano keys and stirring voices of singers such as Billie Holiday or Ella Fitzgerald.
