Immigrants face ‘vicious’ credit cycle

Few people would blame Nils Rehmann and Afton Conneely for feeling like they’d been duped by the Canadian dream – a good job, steady wage and smooth pace of life.

They thought it was all waiting for them last October in Canada, a country that many believe to be the most welcoming in the world.

But the European couple was met with one problem after another when they arrived in Fredericton, as Canada dealt with the effects of the recession and credit crunch.

Small specialized companies can excel in this economy

Peter Hall says New Brunswick spent its way to safety before the economic downturn and the province is better suited than most to deal with the rest of the recession.

“Inside this province we’ve got significant investment activity that preceded the downturn,” said the vice-president and chief economist of Export Development Canada during a presentation at the NB Manufacturers’ Days conference at the Delta Fredericton Hotel on Friday.
